Health Screening and Assessment for Children and Youth Entering Foster Care: State Requirements and Opportunities

This issue brief reports on a 50-state survey conducted by CHCS to understand child welfare agency requirements for health screenings and assessments upon a child's removal from the home. Findings suggest significant opportunities for states to strengthen requirements in support of improvements in health outcomes and related costs for the high-risk foster care population.

A “High-Touch” Approach to Improving Oral Health for Newark Children

CHCS' New Jersey Smiles initiative engaged the state Medicaid agency, health plans, and other regional partners to improve access to dental care among low-income and minority children. This case study describes how the collaborative worked with Newark Head Start programs and community dentists to increase the number of preschool NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid children completing dental visits and establishing dental homes.

These tools support primary care providers, dentists, and Head Start programs in oral health screening, family education, and dental care referrals.

Periodicity of Dental Services for Children in NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid

New Jersey's Medicaid agency, the Department of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS), created the Periodicity of Dental Services for Children in NJ FamilyCare/ Medicaid with age-appropriate recommendations for children ages 0 to 20.

A Guide to Improving Children's Oral Health Care: Tools for the Head Start Community

This manual was developed to help New Jersey Head Start staff working to establish dental homes and improve oral health for low-income children ages 0-3. The guide is a helpful tool for state Medicaid agencies, community organizations, and Head Start sites in other states that are working to improve children's oral health. 

Pediatric Oral Health Action Plan for New Jersey's Children Ages 0-6

Developed by a multi-stakeholder group that was led by the New Jersey Head Start-State Collaboration Project, this action plan outlines strategies to improve oral health care for children throughout the state, particularly those in racial and ethnic minority groups and low-income families.

New Jersey Smiles Intervention Change Package and Measurement Plan for Improving Oral Health Care for Young Kids

This project Change Package describes interventions designed to increase the number of children ages 0-5 who receive an annual dental visit and ensure those at highest risk have access to a dental home.
