Although people with chronic illnesses and disabilities represent approximately 30 percent of the more than 35 million Americans covered under Medicaid, the cost of their specialized care amounts to almost 70 percent of total Medicaid expenditures.
 
This Chartbook identifies populations with special needs in Medicaid and highlights the clinical and fiscal implications for states and health plans enrolling people with chronic illnesses and disabilities in managed care.
