Improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of publicly financed health care

Medicaid Quality Improvement Action Steps

Type:
Fact Sheets

Through a decade of working with national Medicaid leaders, CHCS has identified eight strategies critical for quality improvement in chronic care. States and health plans working with CHCS are pursuing these strategies to improve health services and outcomes, reduce unnecessary utilization, and lower costs within the Medicaid program.

Visit the links below for a variety of resources and tools to help states and health plans adopt these strategies.

  1. Endorse evidence-based practices to guide appropriate care.
  2. Adopt standardized measures for process and outcomes.
  3. Support innovative health information technology to inform quality decisions.
  4. Promote continuous quality improvement for states, plans, and provider practices.
  5. Implement pay-for-performance strategies to reward improvements in care.
  6. Build multidisciplinary care management approaches.
  7. Integrate care, including acute, long-term, and behavioral health services.
  8. Engage consumers in managing their own care.

For examples from innovative states and health plans that have applied these quality improvement action steps, download the Medicaid Quality Action Steps Fact Sheet (PDF).
