In its quest to improve health care quality and cut costs, the Obama administration has urged doctors and hospitals to band together as part of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) — a model devised by researchers at Dartmouth College. But Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System, the main teaching hospital for Dartmouth’s medical school, has abandoned the model, citing mounting financial losses in the federal program.
