As states prepare for a growing population of older adults, multisector plans for aging can help coordinate policies and services across state agencies and community partners. Missouri released its Aging with Dignity: Missouri’s Master Plan on Aging in February 2026 after a nearly three-year planning process that incorporated input from more than 10,000 residents and focused on seven priority areas.
This ASA Generations blog post, authored by CHCS program officer Valerie Flores, explores Missouri’s approach to developing and implementing its multisector plan for aging. It highlights how the state used executive action, cross-agency participation, community engagement, and a dedicated advisory structure to shape the plan and build support for implementation.
Missouri, a participant in CHCS’ Multisector Plan for Aging Learning Collaborative, offers practical lessons for other states developing similar plans, including the value of allowing sufficient time for planning, engaging people with lived experience, sharing responsibility across agencies and partners, and prioritizing achievable early actions.
