Michael Canonico is the director of communications at the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS). In this role, Michael oversees publication and content production, manages creative design and website development, and directs social media and brand strategy. Michael also leads program communications for CHCS’ initiatives focused on delivery system and payment reform, as well as aging and disability.

Previously, Michael was a product marketing director at ActiveHealth Management (an Aetna subsidiary) where he led business-to-business and consumer marketing for ActiveHealth’s portfolio of population health solutions, including clinical decision support, disease management, and wellness coaching. Michael also served as a product communications manager at Optum, where he supported client and consumer communications for Optum’s suite of digital population health solutions, including the company’s health assessment, wellness coaching, and incentives platform.

Prior to joining Optum, Michael was a communications officer at CHCS, where he supported a range of communications operations and program communications activities. Michael began his career as an outreach worker at a community health center that provided health care services for individuals with low incomes and those without insurance.

Michael holds a bachelor’s degree in social science from Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Away from work, Michael explores the universe through his studies in astronomy and cosmology — a field he admits he might have pursued if not for the mathematical demands. His creative side is expressed through gardening and drawing, while his love for period dramas and PBS reveals a penchant for history and culture.
