In 2004, the number of children involved in the child welfare system was estimated at nearly five million, with estimates as high as 800,000 for children in foster care. Of those children in the child welfare system it is estimated that 53 to 72 percent are enrolled in Medicaid managed care.
This series of four fact sheets was created for those who are seeking to improve the care provided by managed care organizations to meet the physical and behavioral health care needs of children and youth involved in the child welfare system.
