Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) — wearable devices that track blood glucose levels — are a standard of care for people with diabetes. While endocrinologists traditionally prescribe CGMs, Medicaid members may face difficulties accessing these specialists. Expanding the role of primary care providers in prescribing CGMs can help Medicaid members receive these devices more quickly and easily.
To improve access to CGMs, state Medicaid programs can assess how their provider network engages in CGM prescribing and monitoring. As part of the CGM Access Accelerator, a national initiative led by the Center for Health Care Strategies through support from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, state teams in Kentucky, New Jersey, and Texas developed survey tools to identify barriers faced by primary care providers in prescribing CGMs to Medicaid members.
This resource explores how these three states conducted provider surveys to identify opportunities related to CGM usage, providing insights that can support other state Medicaid agencies in surveying their primary care networks. A sample survey is included that can be tailored for state-specific adoption.
